This had to be one of my favorite projects that I got to work on. My class wrote down a piece of music that they wanted to commission to the class to work on.
I had to create an original musical work with parameters that were provided by others in the class.
Technical Parameters:
- You may write this piece using any combination of (a) GarageBand for iPad (b) GarageBand for Mac, and/or (c) Logic Pro X.
- All content will consist of MIDI regions (i.e. all software instruments)
- NO prepackaged Apple loops allowed
- NO use of Smart Instruments allows (including Smart Drummer)
- Arpeggiator IS ok.
- Sample (iPad) is OK.
- Audio may be used IF recording of YOU…
Musical Parameters:
- Your music should meet all of the requirements of the commission.
- Your music should have a sense of ‘beginning/ middle/end’ (think arc or pacing as well as repetition and contrast)
- Looking and listening for musical element(s) used in expressive ways.
The Commission I chose was one that said:
Please compose a piece of music that…
- is meant to be listened to on a beach while I am relaxing and enjoying the sunset
- has an acoustic guitar, flute, and any other instrument but those two for sure

- Mellow Sunrise

My Piece:
I wanted the song to sound calming like watching the sunset. The Voice Space track at times sounds like birds are flying over and you are outdoors. I wanted to choose instruments that would compliment each other not just in sound but in an arrangement as well. The Brooklyn Drum track is the heartbeat of the piece and mimics the heartbeat of the listener. I did not want instruments to get too loud or too wild, because that would ruin the relaxation that the listener is experiencing. It is a simple yet striking piece.
